We’re Celebrating International Cat Day with Success Story About Solace

We’re celebrating International Cat Day on Aug. 8, 2021 with a success story about a cat named Solace, who is now ready for adoption! Thanks to support from the community, we’re able to care for cats with special medical needs.

 Solace has been at our San Diego Campus since June 23, 2021. She was brought in by a good Samaritan who found her in the Otay Mesa West neighborhood of San Diego in rough shape, without a collar and no microchip. Solace had red, ulcerated ears and numerous dental concerns. Veterinarians at our Pilar & Chuck Bahde Center for Shelter Medicine diagnosed Solace with a type of skin cancer that is more common in lighter haired cats who have spent a lot of time in sunlight.

Veterinarians performed surgery to remove the cancerous masses, which included removing parts of Solace’s ears. Solace also received extensive dental surgery, including ten tooth extractions.

Despite all of her challenges and hardships, Solace’s spirit remains unbroken. “She is one of the sweetest cats we’ve had in the hospital,” said San Diego Humane Society Veterinarian Nealy Shvil, DVM. “I am just amazed at her resilience and ability to show love to every person she encounters. She is a perfect example of how special cats are, and the care we’re able to provide for them thanks to our community.” 

Solace (Animal ID 742310) is currently available for adoption. She would do best in a home where she is kept inside, to protect her sensitive skin from the sunlight. If taken outside, she should wear pet-friendly sunscreen on the thinned haired areas of her skin.
