San Diego Welfare Organizations Increase Free and Low-Cost Spay/Neuter Access During National Spay/Neuter Awareness Month

In recognition of Spay/Neuter Awareness Month in February, organizations in the San Diego Animal Welfare Coalition significantly increased access to free and low-cost spay/neuter surgeries to address community need. With the rising cost of veterinary care in San Diego County and across the country, it’s one of the coalition’s top priorities to make these lifesaving procedures more accessible to pet families.

Spaying and neutering is a simple way to protect a pet’s health — reducing the risk of cancer, increasing lifespan and helping prevent behaviors like aggression and roaming. Additionally, the routine procedures help address overcrowding in shelters and decrease the population of homeless pets.

Surrounding World Spay Day on Feb. 24, the combined efforts of organizations within the San Diego County Animal Welfare Coalition resulted in more than 1,000 free or low-cost spay/neuter services in just one week:

In addition to increased appointments all month long, San Diego Humane Society and the San Diego County Department of Animal Services joined forces for a special event on Feb. 25 to offer high-volume, high-quality spay neuter services. Thanks to a generous $10,000 donation, 14 appointments were provided free-of-charge for pet families earning under $100,000 per year, with additional low-cost surgeries performed. In total, the two organizations spayed and neutered 84 animals in just one day, utilizing mobile units to maximize the available space.

Though February has come to a close — San Diego Humane Society offers low-cost spay/neuter resources year-round!
