How to Enjoy the Holiday Season with Your Pet

The holidays are a time for joy, celebration and togetherness — and that includes our pets! While we decorate our homes and enjoy our favorite treats, it’s important to keep our furry family members safe and comfortable. Here are some simple ways to make the season bright and pet friendly.

    1. Sharing food: It’s tempting to share a taste of your holiday meal, but many festive foods can upset your pet’s stomach — and some, such as onions, grapes and chocolate, are dangerously toxic. To be on the safe side, skip the table scraps. If your pet sneaks a bite of something unsafe, contact your veterinarian right away.
    2. Toys: It’s the season of giving, and while many stores have toys marketed for pets, not all of them are safe. When choosing a toy, watch out for small detachable parts or easily shredded pieces, which can become choking hazards or cause obstructions if swallowed. Avoid toys with ribbons, buttons, sequins, plastic eyes or bells — your pet’s playtime should be fun, not risky!
    3. Decorations: A twinkling tree or glittering garland might look irresistible to pets — especially curious cats! Secure your tree in a corner, keep delicate ornaments up high and make sure light cords are safely tucked away. Additionally, pets should never drink from the base of a live tree — the stagnant water can contain harmful bacteria.
    4. Plants: Many holiday plants, including amaryllis, Christmas cacti, Christmas rose, evergreens, holly, ivy, juniper, lilies, mistletoe and poinsettias can be toxic to pets if eaten. Keep them out of reach or opt for pet-safe artificial versions to enjoy them without worry.
    5. Costumes: Holiday sweaters may be irresistibly cute, but not all pets enjoy them! If your furry friend seems uncomfortable dressing up, try a holiday-themed collar or bandana, or a festive photo surrounded by decorations instead.
    6. Parties: If you’re hosting a gathering, set up a quiet, cozy place for your pet to escape the commotion. Include their bed, favorite toys and fresh water so they can feel comfortable if they are overwhelmed by the festivities.
    7. Enrichment: Treat your pet to something special! Puzzle toys and treat-dispensing games can keep them entertained for hours. You can even prepare little treat bags for family and friends to gift your pet.
    8. Routine: As much as possible, keep your pet on their regular schedule for feeding and exercise. Pets thrive on routine — so it’s helpful to keep their lifestyle as consistent as you can during the hustle and bustle. Be sure they get plenty of love and attention from you!
    9. Pet identification: Holiday distractions may make it easier for pets to slip out through open doors. Always make sure your pet is wearing a collar with current ID tags, and that their microchip information is up to date. If your pet is not microchipped, make an appointment at one of our campuses for a $30 microchip — it’s one of the best ways to bring a lost pet home safely.
