Fishing Line, Hooks, and Birds
Instructions
If you find a bird tangled in fishing line or caught on a hook, follow these instructions:
- Begin by disposing of the line and hook in a way that is safe for birds on or near the water. There are special containers for the disposal of used fishing line at many fishing areas in San Diego.
- Ducks, cormorants, gulls, fulmars, herons and other water birds frequently become tangled in the fishing line and sometimes swallow the hooks. If a bird is found that has swallowed the hook, do not cut off the line, as this makes it difficult for wildlife rehabilitators to find the hook for removal.
- Please wear protective eye wear and gloves when handling sea and shore birds. Their beaks can be dangerous and they tend to stab at the eyes.
For step by step guidance, use our Wildlife Help Hub at sdhumane.org/wildlifehelp.
When to Contact Humane Law Enforcement
- Contact San Diego Humane Society’s Humane Law Enforcement team (619-299-7012, press 1) if you are unable to handle the birds or if they are in a spot that cannot be reached.
- You can also contact SeaWorld’s Rescue Center. They are able to perform field rescue of sea and shore birds, which Project Wildlife cannot.
