Keep Pets Safe, Dry and Happy During Rainy Weather

When the rare rainstorm hits San Diego County, it’s a great time to make sure your pets stay safe, warm and well-entertained.

From protecting them outdoors to keeping them busy inside, here are 5 essential tips to help your pets weather the storm.

1. Keep pets indoors during cold, windy or rainy conditions.

Rain, chilly temperatures and wet fur can be uncomfortable — and even dangerous — for pets. Bring them inside at night and whenever the weather turns cold or damp.

2. Give them quick, comfortable potty breaks.

When dogs need to go outside, help keep them dry with a jacket or umbrella. If you’re feeling cold, your pet probably is, too — keep walks short and cozy.

3. Provide proper shelter if your pet must be outside.

If outdoor time is unavoidable, ensure pets have access to a dry, draft-free shelter that’s large enough for them to stand up and turn around, with insulated bedding to keep them warm.

4. Burn off energy with indoor enrichment.

Rainy days can lead to pent-up energy — but indoor fun can help! Try short, engaging activities like fetch or tug, puzzle feeders or Kongs, or even a mini training session to keep their minds and bodies active.

5. Speak up if you see an animal in distress.

If you notice a pet left out in unsafe weather, kindly share your concern with their owner — many people don’t realize the risks cold and wet conditions pose. To report suspected neglect, call San Diego Humane Society’s Humane Law Enforcement at 619-299-7012 (press 1).

Stuck Inside? Try These Rainy Day Activities for Pets With Energy to Burn!

With heavy rain in the forecast, your pet may be spending more time indoors — and wondering what to do with all that extra energy. The good news: staying inside doesn’t have to mean being bored. Here are some simple, fun ways to keep your pet active and content:

Play short, interactive games.

A few rounds of fetch or tug can provide great physical and mental exercise. For an added challenge, ask for a quick cue — like “sit,” “down” or “shake” — between turns.

Try hide-and-seek!

Hide yourself, a favorite toy or a treat and encourage your pet to find it. It’s a fantastic way to boost their problem-solving skills and strengthen recall.

Sprinkle in mini training sessions.

Just a few minutes throughout the day can sharpen skills and build confidence. Review easy tricks or introduce something new — keep sessions short and upbeat.

Make meals more enriching.

Puzzle feeders, treat-dispensing toys and slow-feed bowls turn mealtime into a fun challenge, keeping pets occupied as they “work” for their food.

Rainy days don’t have to mean restless pets — they’re a chance to get creative, strengthen your bond and give your pet healthy outlets for their natural behaviors.
