Dog Day Out
Want to make a shelter dog’s day and have a blast while doing it? Sign up for a Dog Day Out! This unique program allows you to take an adoptable dog from any of our campus locations out for a few hours, helping them release energy, get a break from the shelter and meet potential adopters out in the community. Plus, the information you learn about your canine companion — along with the photos and videos you take on your day out — can help them find a loving home more quickly!
You can take the dog on an adventure, such as hiking or a long walk by the ocean, or just simply hang out at home! No matter the activity, your Dog Day Out companion will love the opportunity to spend some quality time with you. Plus, you will be able to provide us with valuable insight into the dog’s personality outside of the shelter, which will allow us to better match them with the right family!
We provide everything you need for a successful outing, including a manual with instructions and important information, a backpack full of supplies and a map with recommended locations to visit. Please note that you’re likely to be paired with a large dog, as they stand to benefit most from a day out! We will do our best to match you with a dog who fits your handling abilities and plan for the day.
Ready to make a shelter dog’s day? Book an appointment at the campus of your choice below!
Please note: New appointments open 2 weeks in advance for corresponding pick-up times on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Please check back regularly for new availabilities and cancellations. Thank you for your patience and support for shelter pets!
Important requirements:
- We ask that you do not allow the dog to interact with any other dogs during your day out, including your own pets. We kindly ask that you plan an activity that does not involve dog parks or dog beaches.
- Children are welcome to join your adventure, but an adult over 18 years of age must be present and in control of the dog’s leash at all times. Watch this video for tips on creating safe interactions between dogs and kids!
- Unless the dog is in your home or securely fenced backyard, the dog must remain on-leash for the duration of your outing.
- You’ll need to stay in San Diego County during your day out and keep a cell phone with you in case we need to get in touch.
- If it is raining or over 85 degrees, outings involving outdoor activities must be rescheduled for safety.
